MARKETING CHAIR, TiEcon 2016
When TIECon, a globally famous conference comes to you to give a visual refresh to their existing site, you automatically know there are more issues that just the site not being pretty to look at. Before starting the project, we knew that we had to carefully sort out the relevant and the irrelevant information. Grouping of information was the most important part of the project. To understand what information people seek when they arrive at TIECon, we looked at hundreds of similar websites to understand the typical conference goer’s pulse. By doing so, we were quickly analyse what information was needed and what was not.
Our primary concern while tackling TIEcon was the number of pages the existing website had. While we were ok with the number in itself, the way information was being presented could be improved significantly. We made a entirely new site map clearly making pathways for the user to crawl through the website. The discoverability of each element has increased now.
SKETCHES TO WIREFRAME DESIGN
Once the sitemap has been finalised , we began to work on the overall site design. The architecture we created earlier in the project provided a great foundation for the initial design work. After innumerable sketches, and hundreds of options we put together all the patterns we like and asked our clients to comment on what they liked in each option and why they liked it. This helped us put things in better perspective. Using the wireframes, we were able to start building a visual language by designing elements which will go on the site.
Creating a visually compelling experience for an event website was not as easy as it looked. We had to ensure the pages were easy to absorb while making sure we had quite a few “aha” moments and visuals played an integral role to help us get there. In just a matter of 15days, TIEcon had a beautiful and compelling website.
The lack of personality on their old website was hurting the motivation of the user to look through deeper for the information they require. As opposed to their existing 19 pages website, UXReactor cut down the page count to 13 by carefully organising the information.
