Minimum Viable Experience
OttoQ was an concept to solve a problem that no one else had tackled. Their team, along with visionary founder, R K Anand, founding engineer and former executive of Juniper Networks, saw it. They recognized that simply driving around searching for parking spaces resulted in traffic congestion, environmental problems, and anxiety. Could this problem be alleviated by allowing people to monetize their own private parking spaces?
They had the expertise in software and a top notch engineering team to build the hardware towards the solution, but they knew without a usable design the product couldn't succeed. They needed a wonderful experience for their user.
One of the first things our new partners told us was that they had a very tight deadline. They needed to go live in 90 days. So we had just three months to research, design, and launch an entire consumer application from scratch. We needed to get started right away and work in the most efficient manner possible.
To solve for time constraints without lowering quality planning was vital. We had to identify the right problems and prioritize from the very first day to allocate our time efficiently. Identifying the right problems is something we take pride in doing.
We did our research to validate the idea and identified three phases we had to work through. The first was focused on our user (the driver). The second phase was focused on our host (the hardware). The third was connecting all three to the web so that both users and hosts could keep track of the data. Each of these phases was given a strict timeline of 30 days.
We conducted at a minimum international biweekly team meetings to keep us on track. This allowed us to avoid time consuming mistakes and keep the project on track for launch. We had teams working on opposites sides of the globe, so keeping to this schedule was a challenge. That’s where working as a partner rather than simply a client/ service provider makes all the difference. Efficient communication was a must.
One of the problems that OttoQ wanted to solve was for user anxiety. Just driving by itself can be stressful, and adding the pressure of finding a parking to that only exacerbates it. We had to thread the needle between functional and smooth.
Through our exhaustive testing of every possible angle of the user experience, we were able to identify items that needed to be addressed to reduce stress. For example, we removed any type of countdown clock as we found they only created more stress for the user. We also chose a color palate that conveyed calmness and removed any unnecessary distractions.
We continued to iterate through all the other possible problems while sticking to our tight deadline required for our partners.
We had now reached the end of the 90 days. A diverse international team working from opposite sides of the world had met its deadline! We had started with nothing more than an idea and now we had delivered the Minimum Viable Experience.
OttoQ, was thrilled with the experience we had created. With this prototype in hand, they were able to go and start driving the outcomes they desired. For example, they took the prototype and were able to have successful product demonstrations with companies like Facebook and Linkedin.
